Wick Academy 3 Deveronvale 2 Reporter Noel Donaldson ACADEMY and their fans couldn't have wished for a better season opener than this, with Richard Macadie snatching the decider in the dying minutes.   It was essentially a game of one half as the first period was a non-productive tussle with Academy looking the more threatening.  
New Gym Equipment for Wick Swimming Pool
High Life Highland has invested in the upgrade of the equipment in the fitness suite at Wick Swimming Pool.   Seven new pieces of resistance equipment will be supplied by Commonwealth Games supplier Technogym from their "Element +" range, along with twelve pieces of cardiovascular equipment which have individual television, radio and I Pod connectivity built in.

Suzanne Carter's Camps Bar "1" team have won the 2014 Wick & District Summer Pool League Championship after defeating last years winners Queens Hotel 8-7 in the final.   After four extremely close frames the finalists were tied at 2-2 in the early stages, but Shane Honeyman defeated Scott Risbridger 2-0 to give Camps "1" a 4-2 lead.

Camps Bar "1" and The Queens Hotel booked their place in the 2014 Wick & District Summer Pool League final, after both sides recored 8-7 deciding frame victories over Retro "1" and Camps Bar "2" respectively.   Both semi final matches ended in 7-7 draws, so a one frame shootout would decide this seasons finalists.

Camps Bar "1" recorded an impressive 7-3 victory over defending champions Queens Hotel on Monday night to qualify for the semi final stage and finish in second place in the league.   Dave Mcgillivray and Mark Alexander were the star players for Camps "1", winning both their singles as well as an excellent 8-ball clearance for McGillivray.

A bumper crowd is expected to attend Saturday's Inverness Highland Games following the announcement by the Games Committee that children aged 12 and under will be admitted free to the event as part of the celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of the opening of Northern Meeting Park.   The opening hour of this year's Gathering will be firmly focused on the younger members of the community with Toddlers Races and Junior Field Events entertaining the crowd before the Opening Ceremony commences at noon.

Camps Bar "2" are the first team to qualify for the Wick & District Summer Pool League semi final play-off stage after defeating defending champions Queens Hotel on Monday night.   The 2012 champions got the better of the current holders in a match where both sets of players played some outstanding pool.

Highland communities gear up to host Queen's Commonwealth baton relay next week
Final preparations are underway in Ullapool, Lairg and Thurso as communities get ready to give a Highland welcome to the Queen's baton relay when it returns to and crosses the Highlands en route from the Western Isles to Orkney on Wednesday 9 July .   The day starts at 9.00am at the Ullapool ferry terminal when the Baton is carried off the Stornoway Ferry and is officially welcomed by Janet Bowen the Lord Lieutenant for Ross and Cromarty who will hand it over to the first of 8 baton bearers.  
First Highland sighting of Queens Baton to be in Aviemore next week
The first chance to see the 2014 Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton in the Highlands will be a week today when the relay arrives in Aviemore on Friday 4 July.   10 eager baton bearers will be lined up and ready at 10am next Friday as the relay convoy enters Aviemore on Grampian Road to travel south through the village.

Ryan Carter's Camps Bar "2" side have moved to the top of the Wick & District Summer Pool League, after winning 6-4 in their top of the table clash against Retro "1".   George Smith and Andrew Edwards helped their Retro team take a 2-0 lead, but the Camps side won four in a row to go 4-2 up.

Bobby Gunn's Retro1 side remain undefeated and sit top of the Wick & District Summer Pool League after an impressive 6-4 victory over current holders Queens Hotel.   Andrew Edwards was the star player for Retro1, winning all three of his games to help his side secure the three points against a strong Queens team.

Highland baton bearers named for Commonwealth Games
The Glasgow 2014 team have announced the names of the 109 batonbearers who will take part when the Queens Baton Relay comes to the Highlands next month.   On Friday 4 July 10 baton bearers will take the baton through Aviemore as it makes it's way to Perth.
