Spotlight on Community Sport in Thurso

13th August 2013

Thurso Community Sport Hub Development.

Community Sport goes under the spotlight in Thurso as the first stages of an exciting new sports development initiative gets underway.

The project will see Thurso being developed as one of only four Community Sport Hubs in the Highlands. Sports clubs, sports enthusiasts and interested members of the public are being invited to attend an open meeting on Wednesday the 28th of August, 7pm at Thurso Swimming Pool to hear more about the initiative and give their views on how the project should be shaped locally.

The Community Sport Hub initiative which is linked to the up-coming Commonwealth Games is being led locally by High Life Highland and backed by Scotland’s national agency for sport; sportscotland. The project aims to bring together the key sporting partners in the area along with the community clubs to investigate how sport and physical activity runs locally, how it can be developed and how provision can be improved to grow participation levels.

In the Highland Region the project has already made a positive impact to the sporting landscape in Tain and Aviemore where the initiative has become established over the last year and it is hoped it will have the same positive impact in Thurso.

This meeting will provide the first stage of developing the project locally. As well getting an introduction to the Community Sport Hub project attendees will also have the opportunity to discuss the current local sporting landscape and the development priorities for the area. The meeting will also provide an insight into how the project could directly benefit sports clubs in the area.

The Community Sport Hub project is a flexible one that can be tailored to meet the local needs and ambitions and with the support of the local community this meeting will be the first step in ensuring the project can have the most positive impact possible for the local area.
