Wick & District Pool League
17th December 2014
Wick & District Pool League's 2014/15 season has reached its halfway point, with Crown1 and Queens Hotel sitting top of their respective divisions. The match of the night saw Lybster's Bayview1 host their biggest rivals Camps2, in a highly entertaining affair.
A close first frame went the way of the Lybster side as Angus Mackay got the better of Bruce Honeyman. After potting 7 of his colours, David Hendry potted a fantastic black down the rail to knock in his first total clearance of the season and level the match at 1-1. Ryan Carter was close to another 8-ball clearance in the next frame, but snookered himself on the black ball.
Steve Atkins fought his way back into the frame, but would lose out to Carter as the Camps side went 2-1 ahead. Frame four saw yet another opportunity for a total clearance as Derek Johnston made his debut in the Wick & District Pool League for Camps2. After seven outstanding shots, Johnston left himself a tricky black which rattled the jaws of the pocket. The next four frames were shared as the match stood at 4-4, but fine play from Steve Atkins and Ronnie Simpson would put Bayview1 into a 6-4 lead.
Camps2 dug deep in the last two frames, with David Hendry playing well once again to help his side earn a draw. Crown1 traveled out to Lybster on Monday night as they went up against bottom side Commercial. The Comm were leading 4-3 but the last five frames went the way of the Crown as they moved to the top of division one on frame difference. Ryan Cook's Blackstairs side moved out of the relegation zone thanks to a 6-6 home draw against Retro1. The Newly promoted Retro side have now drawn six out of seven league games this season. Greg Simpson's Sinclair Bay team continue to impress this season as they secured all three points in their away match against Camps1. Wins from Mark Alexander, David McGillivray, and Robbie Powell helped Camps1 go 3-1 up, but good performances from Jordan Tait and Milky Ronaldson would tie the match at 3-3. The Keiss side would win the next three frames to go 6-3 ahead but a great fightback from the Camps team took it to 6-5 going into the final frame. Things looked to be going the way of the Camps side in the last game, but Suzanne Carter inadvertently potted the black which handed the frame and the match to Sinclair Bay.
In division two, Retro2, The Seaforth Club and The Francis Street Club all secured vital wins on Monday, as all three aim for promotion to next seasons division one. Retro2 got off to a flyer in their match against Mountain Dew, racing into a 5-0 lead. A small fightback from the mountain side made it 5-2, but the Retro lads proved too strong as they ran out 8-4 winners. Craig Durrand's Seaforth Club side are now in third place after impressing in a 9-3 away win against Harpers. Graham Harper and Ricky Hernandez made fine clearances to help their Francis Street Club side take a 4-2 lead at home to Bayview2. The club side would win the next two doubles games, before Nathan Lightley impressed for Bayview2 to pull it back to 6-3. FSC clinched the three points in the next frame, with Michael Mackay winning man of the match after getting three out of three wins. Queens Hotel remain unbeaten and 5 points clear at the top of division two thanks to a 9-3 victory over Crown2.
