Fraserburgh flounder in the face of Wick's firepower

WICK ACADEMY...4...BROCH......1

MANY-A-FAN would probably have settled for a draw in Wick.
Academy's encounter with on-form Fraserburgh on Saturday. But again, the Scorries delivered where it matters... the final scoreline, while giving a performance far from what they are capable of, in the autumn sun at Harmsworth Park, yesterday.
They repeatedly bedevilled promising build-ups by gifting the ball to the opposition although the persistent Broch failed to capitalise on the careless passing. But, when tenacious Wick get it together in attack, they demonstrated that any defence in the Highland League can be penetrated, again and again.
Despite putting down an early marker by hitting the post in the opening minute, it was well into the first period before they found the net through Gary Manson. The other Gary, Weir, continued his goal-scoring form with a dramatic diving header despite the keeper's best efforts and got the "rub of the green", with a celebratory kick of grass cuttings behind the goal, after taking the plaudits of the home fans.
Fraserburgh had to get something for their efforts and netted in the second period, through Scott Barber, but the flickering flame of revival was extinguished with two more Academy goals, a rocket from Orcadian Jamie Pickles - his second for his new club - and Richard Macadie, late on. The result would doubtless have warmed the cockles of Jimmy Rosie's heart. Clubs and fans observed a minute's silence in memory of the ground caretaker, who died recently...Academy's new flag, lowered to half mast.
The win sees the Scorries maintain their amazing home record and hold their third place - on goals difference - in the league table. Their winning ways are certain to build confidence for that crucial North Cup clash with Nairn County, at Grant Park, Inverness, on October 20.
There are still some places left on the supporters' bus. Those interested, can contact Johnny
Robertson on Academy's new strips are expected to go on sale, shortly, and can be purchased from Stewart Gunn's shop in High Street, Wick.

Wick Academy 2 Forres Mechanics 2 Reporter Noel Donaldson THIS was a day more suited to those with webbed feet rather than footballers but both sides defied the elements and gave their fans their money's-worth. Wick Academy 0 Fraserburgh 1 Reporter Noel Donaldson ACADEMY supporters' hopes were doubtless high that the miracle mid-week comeback by their team against Forres Mechanics, would be the catalyst to getting to grips with their home results jinx. In the event, the encounter with a well-marshalled Broch outfit was something of an anti-climax, Academy unable to replicate anything close to that scintillating 5-3 performance - underlining their inherent lack of consistency and failing to secure a draw even, in a game that was no classic.
Reporter Noel Donaldson Wick Academy 2 Deveronvale 2 A LATE goal, ruled offside, prevented Academy taking all three points and hopefully sparking some home wins. Given the effort put in by the two sides, though, a draw was probably a fair result.
