Caithness Amateur Sevens Football League - Week 10

Week 10 of the RMC sponsored sevens league and the headlines are:
Horror leg break leaves players stunned.
The much awaited clash between Acks and Pentland was dramatically abandoned last night after both sets of players decided not to continue after Pentlands Ally Fraser suffered a horrific double fracture of the leg and Acks David Mackay suffered a bad knee injury. They had both challenged for a 50/50 ball when the accident occurred. The players were removed from the field by ambulance crews. Ally Fraser was sent down to Inverness to get his leg pinned. The players and officials of all teams send best wishes to both players.

First up this week were bottom club Co-op and mid table Thistle.
The first half was quite an even affair with Co-op using the wind to their advantage. Thistles Peter MacGreggor turned the game to Thistles advantage with two firmly struck goals just before half time. In the second half Thistle using the wind well swamped Co-op. Peter MacGreggor went on to hit another two and further goals by Terry Cannop and two by Eddie MacLory saw Thistle on easy street. Thistle even had time to throw on a 14 year old player late on in the match. The only black mark for Thistle was when midfielder Malcolm MacDonald who was being booked for a trip swore at the referee and promptly saw red. He now misses Thistle's next 3 matches against Workshops, Crazy Gang and Ashes.

Ashes kicking against the wind took the game to Top Joes in the second game this evening. Joes goalkeeper had to look smart as Chris Dunnett rifled in a few long range efforts and Daniel Mackay hit the post when well placed. Dunnett eventually broke the deadlock when he ghosted past the Joes defence and fired home. Ashes were two up shortly after when Paul Curwen netted after some fine midfield play and a fine "dummy" by trialist Terry MacKay. In the second half further goals from Curwen and Dunnett saw Ashes take control and Dave Stockan scored the fifth and goal of the night from fully 20 yards. Terry Mackay also smacked one of the crossbar as Ashes pushed foreword. This result coupled with Groats defeat sees Ashes go

Crazy Gang started the match against Workshops in fine style when Andrew Taylor scored after on 30 seconds. The Gang then pushed for a second and were caught cold when Dougie Mackay levelled. MacKay then fired Workshops in front and Crazy Gang wilted. In the second half Workshops piled on the pressure and Niall Murray made it three. Ryan Miller Pulled a goal back for Crazy gang but then it was all Workshops. MacKay hit another for his hat trick and further goals from Fraser Welsh, Steve Morris and Paul Marshal finished the game. This result sees Workshops move into second spot in the league.

League leader John O'Groats opened the scoring against Castletown in the battle of the villages through Sean Henstridge. They pushed hard to increase their lead but found Castletown's defence in good form and when Stuart Mackenzie levelled for Castletown it was game on. The second half was an even affair with chances for both sides. It became apparent that the next goal was all important and it was Mackenzie who supplied the goods firing home from close range after a good midfield move. Groats tried manfully to get the equalises but Castletown held out to take the points. Mackenzie blotted his copybook with a yellow card for tripping.

There will be a meeting of the league tonight (Friday) at 7.30 pm in the St Clair, Thurso.
