Caithness Amateur Sevens Football League - Week 13
17th December 2001
The re-arranged fixture between Workshops and Thistle was played yesterday(Sunday) at Naver.
Workshops knew a win was important to keep the pressure on The Ashes at the top and duly took the game to Thistle. Some great goalkeeping by Cannop kept them at bay, but with 15 minutes on the clock Graeme Robertson stole in behind the Thistle defence and fired home to put Workshops ahead. Thistle seemed in disarray at this point and only some last ditch defending kept Workshops out. Thistle then regrouped and played some lovely football and it was no surprise when they equalised. A shot cannoned off the Workshops post and bobbled about the box where Michael McPhee was on hand to stab the ball home.
The second half was an even affair with both sided creating chances. Thistle had made a crucial change bringing goalkeeper Christie Cannop into the fray and it was to pay off handsomely .Cannop picked up a loose ball in midfield and drove forward. No Workshop player attempted to tackle him and he drove home from 15 yards. Workshops then created a few chances but stand in goalkeeper Murphy blocked well, however he could do nothing about Workshops equaliser when Jamie MacKay ghosted in at the back to fire home with only 3 minutes remaining. A draw seemed on the cards but Thistle's Alan Tait had other ideas. A ball was threaded through to him just outside the box and he turned the defender before sliding the ball home.
Full time Thistle 3 Workshops 2.
