Week 14 of the RMC sponsored league, and the headlines are:
Workshops edge out Castletown in Seven-Goal Christmas Cracker
Castletown were left cursing their luck after fighting back from a goal down three times against Workshops only to come away empty-handed. First Murray Mackay, and then Stuart Mackenzie had twice cancelled out Workshops' lead, but the village side were denied a deserved point when Neil Fearn's late strike took a wicked deflection off Murray Mackay to wrong-foot keeper Bruce Souter. Also on target for the works side were Dougie Gunn (2) and an excellent solo effort by Steve Morris.
Top Joes versus Thistle was also an entertaining game. Top Joes twice took the lead through Richie Woodcock and Will Smith, but were pegged back by two well-taken goals from Terry Cannop. In a nip-and-tuck second half, Thistle finally got their noses in front courtesy of a real collectors item from veteran Pete McGregor, a cheeky back-heel that found the bottom corner. Top Joes created chances to equalise, but keeper Callum McCalpine was in fine form and Thistle held on to claim all three points, 3-2.
Earlier in the evening, Crazy Gang took the lead against Pentland when Chris Williamson pounced on a blocked shot to score. The Gang created one or two chances to increase their lead but Pentland took control, equalising midway through the first half and taking the lead through a Donald Allan thunderbolt on the stroke of halftime. Crazy Gang then took the game to Pentland and a great move finished off by Lee Elder made it 2-2. The Gang then pushed for a winner but a defensive mix-up allowed Pentland to steal the lead, and they held on to win 3-2.
Acks started brightly against high-flying Ashes, and created a good early opportunity that Derek Manson only just managed to keep out. Ashes then took the lead on ten minutes, when Kris Smith's corner was met on the volley by Chris Dunnett. From then on it was one way traffic, with Ashes putting last years' champions to the sword. Two goals from Daniel Mackay meant a half-time lead of 3-0, and Ashes doubled this with second-half
strikes from Terry Mackay, Chris Dunnett and Kris Smith. Acks found the target late on, but it was little consolation in a final scoreline of 6-1.
Once John O'Groats had taken an early lead against bottom side Co-op, the result was rarely in doubt. A Sean Henstridge hat-trick and a superb goal from Stuart Sinclair saw the village side run out comfortable 4-0 winners, leaving Co-op still searching for that elusive first win of the season.
The league now takes a break, resuming on Tuesday 8th January 2002.
Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to all players, officials and supporters.
