Young Wick Swimmers In Winning Form
8th July 2009
It was a small but talented group of Wick Amateur Club swimmers who took part in the recent Elgin Mini Meet.
At the 9 year old age group Darren Taylor gained more experience when he participated in three strokes which included a personal best time in his back stroke.
The remaining four swimmers were all taking part in the very competitive 11 year old age group. The Keiss pair of Ben Johnston and Ross Perry are now getting the benefit of the commitment to their training over the last twelve months and are now able to compete with the top swimmers in the North of Scotland. Both the boys came home with Pbs and Ben took a fourth place in his breast stroke.
Two Wick Swimmers, Shannon MacKenzie and Fraser Tait then achieved a notable double by taking four golds each after winning all their respective events. This took their gold medals in individual events over the last month to 26 between them, after they also won all their events in the Thurso Mini Meet and the Clubs own Gala.
The most exciting part of these meets for swimmers, coaches and spectators are the relay races. Normally this is where the big Aberdeenshire teams dominate proceedings but in the mixed format the four swimmers from Wick, Ben, Ross, Fraser and Shannon had other ideas. In the freestyle relay the Wick team were in the second of four heats and after impressive swims from all four swimmers they won their heat and then there was a nervous wait to see if their time was good enough. After the other two heats were finished it was Gold for Wick by a clear second and a half.
The last event of the day was the Medley relay and after their performance earlier in the day the Wick team were seeded in the final heat, up against the strong teams from Bridge of Don, Cults, Elgin and Buckie, who were all out for revenge. Ben Johnston led the way with his back stroke and Wick were soon competing for first place. Fraser Tait was on the breast stroke leg and opened up a lead on the other teams. Shannon MacKenzie lengthened that lead after her butterfly stroke. Ross Perry was on the final freestyle leg and was never in danger of being caught. This tremendous relay double finished off a fine day for the Wick Swimmers.
