Wick Swimmers At School Swimming Championships In Glasgow
17th February 2008
Four swimmers from Wick took part in the Scottish Schools Swimming Championships at Tollcross Park Leisure Centre in Glasgow on Saturday the 27th of January. The 50 metre pool at Tollcross will also be the venue for the swimming competition during the Commonwealth games to be held in Glasgow in 2014.
First up was Fraser Tait representing Pulteneytown Academy. Fraser had qualified as 16th out of the 20 swimmers taking part in the 50m breaststroke in the 12 and under age group. After winning his heat in a personal best of 43.55 seconds he finished 6th place overall and was first home of those born in 1997 with only older swimmers born in 1996 ahead of him.
Next to compete were Stephanie Webster and Rachel Munro both representing Wick High school in the aged 13-14 100 metre Butterfly. Whilst both were disappointed not to achieve personal bests they had done well to qualify in what is always a very completive age group especially for girls and the experience of swimming in a 50m pool will be one they will benefit from. Stephanie finished 16th in a time of 1:22.24 and Rachel was 18th in a time of 1:23.35.
Last but not least was Rona Plowman who was representing Wick High also in the 13 14 age group. She took part in two events over the day the first being the 200m freestyle in which she was ranked 1st going into the race. Rona did not disappoint as she again underlined her promise at a national level by taking gold in a time of 2:13.54 over 2 seconds clear of her nearest rival. Later in the afternoon Rona took part in the stamina sapping 200m Individual Medley and came a very respectable 3rd in a time of 2:31.10 to complete a very good day for the Wick swimmers.
Some of the swimmers were in action the following day when a squad of 15 from Wick ASC took part in the Highland Swim Team meet in Inverness. The aim was to give swimmers an opportunity to obtain times at a range of distances. Out of the 74 swims completed, 52 personal bests were achieved making it a worthwhile day for those taking part who were, Shannon MacKenzie, Stacey Webster, Stephanie Webster, Lauren Sinclair, Rachel Munro, Andrew Manson, Fraser Tait, Jordan Munro, Mathew Sinclair, Scott Taylor, Christopher Manson, Craig Gerrie, Cameron Tait, Craig Cormack and Scott Sutherland.
