Caithness shooters put on a fine display of marksmanship at the National Small-bore Rifle Association Scottish Championship event, held at Bankend near Dumfries last week in changeable weather conditions. Whilst overall a clutch of medals and podium placings returned to Caithness it was the three youngest Caithness representatives who brought home the silverware.

Katrina Mackenzie (Pentland RC) continued her recent good form, winning a Class 'D' championship aggregate cup, and Gordon Buchan (Watten RC - Under 18) took home the Wyvern Rosebowl as reward for winning the Weekend Aggregate competition for Class 'C'.

Success continued in the premier event, the Earl Haig Memorial Scottish Championship, where no less than three local shooters qualified for the grand final.

Shooting in difficult wind conditions, Hugh Simpson (Wick Old Stagers RC) finished third overall in a closely contested three card match over 100 yards to pick up the bronze medal.

Stephen Blackwood (Halkirk RC) competing in his first ever Haig event finished a highly creditable third in the Class B,C&D division of the 'Haig', but it was Gregor Bremner (Watten RC - Under 21) who carried the day, holding his nerve and mastering the wind to take the trophy in the B,C&D division.

Prizes and trophies were presented by David Mundell, MP for Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale.'
